contextual research: Children Bedrooms in Films

1. Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) Set in WWII, this movie sees three siblings get evacuated to an apprentice witch’s house. Their adventure begins as they cast a spell on a bedknob, enabling their bed to fly! Best feature: that flying bed, of course!

2. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) In this classic children’s film, ten-year-old Elliott lures a wayward alien (E.T.) to his bedroom and forges a friendship that has melted many hearts over the years. Best feature: a massive wardrobe, big enough to hide an alien in.

3. WarGames (1983) In another ‘80s classic, Matthew Broderick plays a young computer nerd who inadvertently connects to a top-secret military computer and manages to start a countdown to World War III - all from his bedroom. Best feature: controlling the world from the humble bedroom computer.

4. Big (1988) Who can forget Tom Hanks’ epic bedroom and apartment when he played a kid trapped in a grown up’s body and landed a job as a toy tester? Every child in the ‘80s wanted their own vending machine in their pad! Best feature: having a Pepsi vending machine fully stocked at all times.

5. Richie Rich (1994) Macaulay Culkin plays the richest kid in the world and has a basketball court in his bedroom as well as a McDonald’s in his mansion. Nuff said. Best feature: being able to jump out of bed and run up for a slam dunk.

6. Toy Story (1995) Probably one of the most famous bedrooms of all sees Andy’s toys come alive when humans aren’t around. Best feature: Buzz Lightyear and Woody acting out behind your back.

7. Where the Wild Things Are (2009) In this adaptation of the synonymous famous book, nine-year-old Max’s adventure begins after he throws a wobbly when his mum won’t visit his fort he made in his bedroom.
